Somerley park international horse trials
In April and in the interest of legacy I wrote a Wikipedia entry recording the thoughts and notable works of Harveywetdog. I admit I was ignorant of the rules concerning self promotion on Wikipedia and consequently my entry was correctly deleted and my account expunged from the system. As a result my original words and links were sadly lost but nevertheless here is a rewrite. Perhaps when I'm gone someone will be able to enter it onto Wikipedia as a fitting epitaph for the Harveywetdog Project.
Read more. April 09, When I'd first drawn up my list of Events to attend in Somerley Park hadn't been on my list but Howick had; Howick is basically just down the road and Somerley is a couple of hours away. But when Sunday at Gatcombe was cancelled and potentially diverted to a third day at Somerley I was drawn to look at the participants on Wednesday I realised it made more sense to travel to Somerley mid-week and leave the rest of the Easter Weekend free for other things.
Sorry Howick! So I had a good idea where I was headed and made good use of Rownhams on the M27 to stock up on coffee and calories for the day.
A diet of double shot cappuccino, Belgian chocolate tiffin, double double decker and double boost probably isn't ideal but I did have a bottle of water as well to keep me hydrated.
Once across the rickety bridge how long will that remain Discovery proof? M3 to the A31 past Ringwood, then take the B towards Verwood, then the right-hand fork to Alderholt. The entrance for horseboxes is two miles on the right after a sharp right bend. Do not enter from A with horses as there is a weak bridge with a weight limit! This is a compact event with no phase more than 5min from the lorry park, atmospheric main ring and water complex. The dressage is in a large, flat field with plenty of room.
The showjumping is on old turf in a very large arena. Fences and warm-up will be moved if the ground becomes cut up. The ground is well draining sand over gravel. Permanent and portable fences provide a variety of educational questions. The tracks are up to height and bold, but straightforward too; suitable for first-timers.
